thanks stranger! inspiring someone is the highest compliment, i think.
1. i went to like 5 national portfolio days in high school and talked to a bunch of schools i wasn’t really interested in just to get different perspectives on what they were looking for. definitely go to all of those that you can. this might seem obvious, but have your portfolio play to your strengths. put in work you are excited about and they will be able to tell.
2. a lot of my drive comes from personal situations and making things helps me figure shit out sometimes. for the sketchbooks, i’m inspired by things around me. more concretely, i love wandering through the huge art book section in my university library and seeing what jumps out at me!
3. i don’t consider the sketchbook pages my most creative work, but i like to experiment with media. because they’re just sketchbook pages, i can’t really fail and that makes it a lot easier to try new things! if you think your stuff is boring, fuck shit up a bit! why not? my view is that i’m most likely not going to be able to look at most of the stuff i’m making now in a few years, so it can’t hurt to make some horrible mistakes for the sake of making more interesting work.
my professor sterling hundley inspires me a lot. this is his blog: http://advice.sterlinghundley.com/ - after the book ads, he has a lot of interesting thoughts & theories about art that i recommend.
